Kylian Mbappe has released a statement on his future at Paris Saint-Germain following reports surrounding his contract situation.
The French forward reportedly sent a formal letter to the Ligue 1 champions on Monday informing them that he will not trigger the option to extend his contract at the Parc des Princes.
Now, the Frenchman, who has been strongly linked with a move in the past two seasons, has spoken for the first time since those claims emerged.
In a statement to AFP, the 24-year-old said PSG have always been aware of his contract situation as he heads into the last year of his £650k-per-week deal.
“I have never discussed any contract renewal with PSG,” he is quoted as saying.
“The board has been informed since July 15th, 2022 of my decision not to extend beyond 2024 — and the letter sent was only meant to confirm what I already told them.”
Real Madrid have unsurprisingly emerged as frontrunners to sign Mbappe. In fact, Mbappe wants to join the Spanish club this summer, according to French publication Le Parisien.
The 24-year-old wants to pounce on the chance to replace Karim Benzema after his fellow countryman departed for a new challenge in Saudi Arabia.
Madrid president Florentino Perez is said to be interested in bringing Mbappe to the Bernabeu.
Last week, he hinted that the player could become a Los Blancos player when the summer window rolls around in 2024 but this latest development could certainly speed things up.
When asked by a fan in the street if Mbappe will be signed, Perez replied: “Yes, but not this year.”
