Manchester United will be looking to retain the trophy they won at Wembley at last year, but for now, it is clubs from the Championship, League One and League Two entering the fray
Fresh off the league fixtures being announced, the 72 EFL clubs have now discovered who they will play in the first round of the Carabao Cup.
Manchester United won the competition last season, beating Newcastle 2-0 at Wembley. Both finalists, along with the other six teams playing in Europe won’t enter until the third round, with the remaining top-flight clubs joining in the second.
Leeds, Leicester and Southampton – fresh off being relegated from the Premier League – will face Shrewsbury, Burton Albion and Gillingham respectively. Meanwhile, Wrexham and Notts County, back in after winning promotion from the National League take on Wigan and Lincoln City.
For the purposes of the first round, clubs are split into southern and northern sections with all ties to be played in the week commencing August 7.
